One of the first lessons I learned when I started in the art world, is that very few are willing to help you, and it is very difficult to get answers to your doubts, that caused me a lot of sadness because in my head I had many doubts, and I needed answers, I wanted to learn and solve my doubts to progress. But it was not like that, I wrote to several artists, asking them about technical things that I could not control, I needed help, but most of the time I did not get an answer to my questions, not even a polite answer, they just ignored me. Only two answered me and guided me in my search, I thank them for having listened to me, and for having dedicated a few minutes of their time to me, without a doubt my respect for these artists is much greater now than before, it shows that besides being great artists they are also good people, the ego has not corrupted their spirit, they still maintain humility, that honors them.
For that reason I have decided that I will answer and help everyone who asks me, within my possibilities, I know how important it is that they help you when you are completely lost, but that doesn’t mean that I will do the job for them or that I will give them all the answers because being an artist means finding your own identity and path, and that can’t be done by anyone for you. It’s a personal quest, but having them help you solve technical problems is a great opportunity, and it will save you time to focus on the most important thing, your art.
I understand that the art world is ruthless, competitive, and often unfair and cruel, for that reason artists become hermetic and suspicious, the reality is that there is a fear of being copied, of being robbed of your ideas, or the technical secrets that cost so much effort to achieve, I imagine that for that reason you become suspicious of your knowledge, of your universe. Actually, it is normal behavior, your discoveries and your technique will make your work unique and special, and if you find the key to success, it is normal not to want to share it, but still, even if you don’t reveal your secrets, you can guide and teach the basic techniques so that others can follow your path.
I appreciate your raw honesty. It also comes through in your sculpture. Which by the way, are beyond magnificent.
