Gofun Japanese Pigment: The Ancient White Made from Shells

There are materials we choose because they solve a technical problem, and others that change the way we think about the surface of a sculpture.


For me, gofun belongs to the second group.


I first became interested in it because of its appearance: a quiet, mineral white, extraordinarily matte and very different from the flat opacity of modern paint. But the more I learned about it, the more fascinating it became. Behind that apparently simple white surface lies a material with centuries of history, made from shells, water, animal glue and, perhaps most importantly, time.


It is a material born from patience.


And perhaps that is one of the reasons I feel so comfortable working with it.


What is gofun?

Gofun (胡粉) is a traditional Japanese white pigment whose principal component is calcium carbonate. Today it is generally produced from finely processed seashells, particularly oyster shells.


Unlike a modern acrylic paint, gofun is not supplied as a complete paint system. The pigment itself has no binding power. Traditionally it is combined with nikawa, an animal glue made from collagen, which allows the particles to adhere to the surface.


This apparently simple combination — shell and glue — has been used in Japanese art for centuries.


Its importance goes far beyond its whiteness.


Depending on how it is prepared and applied, gofun can appear chalky, velvety, dense, translucent or almost luminous.


It is white, but it never feels like an empty white.


A white with a long history


The history of gofun is slightly more complicated than its modern definition suggests.


The word did not originally refer to shell pigment. In early Japanese sources, gofun could refer to white lead, a pigment introduced through continental Asia. Over time, however, shell-based calcium carbonate gradually became the material associated with the name.


Shell white appears to have been known in Japan by the late Heian period, around the twelfth century, while sources generally place its widespread replacement of lead white around the Muromachi period.


There was a practical reason for this transition.


White lead was beautiful and highly opaque, but it could darken under certain environmental conditions. Shell white offered another kind of white — chemically different, stable in colour and particularly suited to Japanese artistic traditions.


By the Muromachi period, shell-based gofun had become an important white pigment, and its use continued through later Japanese painting traditions and eventually into what we now call Nihonga.


But painting was never its only territory.


Gofun was also used on sculptures and masks, as a ground, as a coating, mixed with coloured pigments, and in the making of traditional Japanese dolls.


This last use is especially interesting to me as a figurative sculptor.

Traditional Japanese doll making reveals something fundamental about gofun: it can behave as much like a surface-building material as a conventional paint.


On certain dolls, the face, hands and feet were covered with successive layers of gofun mixed with nikawa. Coarser preparations could form the underlying coats, while increasingly refined gofun was used toward the surface.


The craftsman could build, smooth and refine those layers.


In some techniques, minute facial forms could even be enhanced through repeated applications of the material before the final surface was painted and polished. Traditional descriptions mention the building up of areas such as the nose and mouth, followed by the delicate painting of eyebrows, lips and cheeks.


The result was not simply a white face, but a surface with depth.


That ability to build a skin rather than merely cover an object is one of the qualities that first made gofun so interesting to me as a sculptor.


From oyster shell to pigment

The traditional manufacture of high-quality gofun is remarkably slow.


One of the most valued raw materials has historically been the shell of the Itabo oyster.


After collection, the shells are not simply washed and ground.


They are left outside.


For years.


Traditional manufacturers describe weathering periods of approximately ten to fifteen years. During that time rain, sunlight and seasonal changes gradually remove organic matter and impurities and bleach the shells.


Only then does the real processing begin.


The weathered shells are selected and cleaned before passing through several stages of crushing and grinding. Traditional production includes coarse crushing, pounding and wet grinding with water using stone mills.


The resulting material is then refined through levigation.


This is a wonderfully simple process based on gravity.


Particles of different sizes settle through water at different speeds. By repeatedly suspending the powdered shell in water and separating the fractions according to their settling behaviour, craftsmen can isolate increasingly fine grades of pigment.


The refined suspension is finally spread in thin layers over wooden boards — traditionally cedar — and allowed to dry naturally.


What remains is an extraordinarily refined calcium-carbonate pigment.


So when we open a packet of good gofun today, we are holding the final result of a process that may have begun more than a decade earlier.


I find that rather beautiful.


We live surrounded by materials designed to be immediate: open the container, stir, apply, dry.


Gofun begins by waiting.


Different grades, different surfaces


Not all gofun behaves in exactly the same way.


Traditional manufacturers produce different qualities and particle grades according to the purity of the shell material and the degree of refinement.


Coarser particles can create more body and texture. Finer grades create smoother, more delicate surfaces and are particularly suitable for final layers.


This means that the artist is not merely choosing a white, but also how that white will behave on the surface and interact with light.


Applied thinly, the underlying material can remain perceptible. Built through successive layers, gofun can become increasingly opaque and physically present.


That variability is one of its great strengths.


The traditional preparation: making the gofun dango




Preparing gofun traditionally is almost a ritual.


Because powdered shell has no natural adhesion, it must be intimately combined with nikawa.


The dry gofun is first ground carefully in a mortar until the desired fineness is achieved. Liquid nikawa is then added little by little while the pigment is kneaded.


Eventually the mixture becomes a soft mass approximately comparable in consistency to an earlobe.


This is shaped into a small ball known as a gofun dango.


And then comes one of my favourite parts of the traditional process.


The ball is repeatedly struck against the dish.


This technique is sometimes called hyakutataki — literally associated with “a hundred beatings”, although the exact number is not the important part.


The repeated impact helps expel trapped air and forces the nikawa to distribute thoroughly throughout the pigment. Gradually the surface of the little white mass becomes smooth and slightly lustrous.


The dango can then be rolled into a cord or spiral. Warm water — traditionally around 60°C — is poured over it and left briefly before being discarded.


The prepared gofun is then dispersed again with a small amount of water or nikawa until it reaches the consistency required for painting.


It is an extraordinary amount of preparation for something we might casually call “white paint”.


But it also explains the material.


Gofun demands attention before it ever touches the artwork.


Applying gofun


Gofun does not particularly reward impatience.


Thick applications can crack or detach. Traditional practice therefore favours controlled layers, allowing one application to dry before adding another.


Those layers can be used in very different ways.


Gofun may create an opaque white surface, serve as a ground beneath other pigments, be mixed with colours to soften or lighten them, create raised details, or be polished to achieve different effects.


In ukiyo-e, it was even used to create effects such as falling snow.


The same material can therefore behave as pigment, ground and texture.


Gofun and Nihonga


Gofun became one of the characteristic materials associated with Japanese painting and remains fundamental to Nihonga.


Nihonga does not rely on the familiar tube paints of Western oil or acrylic painting. Traditional materials include mineral pigments, earth colours, sumi, metallic leaves and powders, shell white and nikawa.


Many of these pigments have little or no adhesion by themselves, so pigment and binder remain separate until the artist prepares them for use.


I find something deeply appealing in that.


You understand what the surface is made from because you have physically constructed it.


There is shell. There is glue. There is water. There is pigment.


And there is your hand.


What gofun does to a sculpture

This, ultimately, is the reason I use it.


Not because it is Japanese or because it is ancient. Tradition alone does not make a material better.


I use it because of what it does to the sculpture.


On fired clay, gofun gives me a white that does not behave like an opaque coat of modern paint. Its matte, mineral surface receives light softly, and by controlling the thickness of the layers I can decide how much of the ceramic body remains present.


I do not necessarily want to erase the clay completely.


A darker tone can survive inside a crease. A warmer colour can appear through a thin passage. Raised areas can catch more white while recesses retain depth. The result is not perfectly uniform, and that is precisely what interests me.


For figurative work, this allows the surface to suggest skin without trying to imitate skin literally.


The clay is still there.


Working with its limitations


Gofun is not an indestructible material.


Traditional surfaces can be sensitive to humidity and abrasion, and incorrect proportions of nikawa, excessive thickness or poorly prepared layers can lead to cracking or flaking.


For me, understanding those limitations is simply part of learning the material.


Too much binder changes its character. Too little compromises adhesion. Heavy applications behave differently from thin ones. Each layer affects the next.


As a ceramic sculptor, that relationship feels familiar.


Clay also has rules. We can learn them, work with them and push them, but we cannot simply pretend they do not exist.

My use of gofun is not an attempt to reproduce traditional Nihonga or Japanese doll-making techniques.


I work on fired ceramic sculpture, in another context and for another purpose.


What I take from the tradition is an understanding of the material: building thin layers, varying opacity, allowing the surface beneath to participate, and accepting that the final result does not need to be perfectly uniform.


That gives me something I find difficult to achieve with conventional paint.


The sculpture does not simply look as though it has been painted white.


The white becomes part of the sculpture.


And perhaps this is what continues to fascinate me about gofun.


Something as ordinary as an oyster shell can be left outdoors for years, weathered by rain and sun, crushed, washed, separated, ground and mixed with glue until it becomes an impossibly fine white pigment.


Then I can place that material over clay that has been shaped by hand and transformed by fire.


Shell over earth.


A material that once lived in the sea becoming the final skin of a sculpture.


There is something about that transformation that I find difficult to resist.
